Equilar has just released our latest report, on peer-group trends in the S&P 1500. This report delves into changes in peer groups in 2010, including disclosure examples taken directly from the proxies. A few of our findings:


  • Most peer groups contain 11-20 companies: 63.1% of S&P 1500 peer groups had between 11 and 20 companies. The average number of companies in a peer group was 19.
  • Companies modify peer groups regularly: 55.8% made a change in their peer group from 2009 to 2010.
  • Companies benchmark to higher-revenue peers: 78.6% of companies had revenues equal to or below the 60th percentile of their peer group. The average revenue rank was around the 45th percentile.
