Key Findings:

  1. 33 CEO departures through H1 2024 versus 50 in all of 2023

  2. Five appointed CEOs in 2024 so far are women versus eight in all of 2023

  3. 34.4% of appointed CEOs in 2024 so far are external hires versus 29.2% in all of 2023

Through the first half of 2024, there were 33 CEO departures at Equilar 500 companies, according to the H1 2024 Equilar CEO Tracker. This compares to a total of 50 CEO departures in all of 2023.

The average CEO lifetime pay for all 33 departing CEOs is $109.0 million, with a median of $59.8 million. Richard C. Adkerson (Freeport-McMoRan Inc.), whose tenure surpassed 20 years, earned the highest total CEO lifetime pay at $544.5 million. Julia A. Sloat (American Electric Power Company, Inc.), with a tenure of just under 14 months, had the lowest CEO pay at $4.6 million.

During the first half of 2024, one female CEO departed from her role: Julia A. Sloat (American Electric Power Company, Inc.). On the other hand, five women were appointed CEO in the first half of 2024: Lori D. Koch (DuPont de Nemours, Inc.), Adaire Fox-Martin (Equinix, Inc.), Ariane Gorin (Expedia Group, Inc.), Kathleen L. Quirk (Freeport-McMoRan Inc.) and Joanna L. Geraghty (JetBlue Airways Corporation). The prevalence of women appointed as CEOs in the Equilar 500 increased from 13.3% in 2022 to 16.7% in 2023.

Overall, external appointments increased from 21.7% in 2022 to 29.2% in 2023. For all appointments through the first half of 2024, 34.4% of CEOs appointed have been external hires.
